After thoughtful consideration and many conversations over recent months, we have made the decision to close the Southpaws Moorabbin hospital and transition our services and team members to our Malvern East and Mornington locations.

This was a significant decision. Moorabbin is where Southpaws began — where we trained interns, residents, and specialists, and where we have cared for thousands of patients and families. We are deeply proud of the legacy and growth that started there.

Why is Moorabbin closing?

This decision was not made lightly. Many factors were carefully considered — clinical, operational, and financial — with one clear goal: to ensure the long-term strength and sustainability of Southpaws.

By bringing our people and services together across our Malvern and Mornington hospitals, we can continue to invest in our team, facilities, and technology — strengthening collaboration and ensuring the best possible care for every patient and client.

Aside from the closure of the Moorabbin location, it’s business as usual at Southpaws. You’ll continue to work with the same clinicians and support staff you know and trust, and the referral process remains unchanged.

We’re also continuing to evolve how we work with our referring partners — improving communication, providing greater certainty around pricing, and offering more flexibility around payment — all to make the referral experience as smooth as possible.

Our Malvern hospital now serves as the central hub for multidisciplinary specialist care, supported by our specialist-led Emergency and Critical Care department, which continues to grow and strengthen.

Our Mornington hospital remains fully operational, providing advanced specialist surgery for the wider community.

While it’s always difficult to say goodbye to a hospital that holds so much history and heart, the future is bright — and our commitment to excellence and compassion remains unchanged.
