Critical Care and Emergency
Southpaws’ critical care team, composed of dedicated veterinarians, nurses, and support staff, provides round-the-clock care to our patients and referred cases.
We offer emergency services both directly to the public/walk-ins and for referred emergencies. Unlike some 24-hour hospitals, we ensure our teams remain focused on our patients at all times. Common cases include pre and post-surgical, medical, and oncological patients who require monitoring or additional support for unexpected changes and complications. We also support our referral veterinary community by receiving referred emergencies and high dependency case transfers when the required level of care exceeds their availability or resources.
Our advanced technology includes diagnostic imaging and laboratory investigations, continuous patient monitoring, and experts in intensive care, surgery, and oncology to support patient needs. Onsite equipment includes multi-parameter monitoring devices, a complete Idexx laboratory with a Radiometer Blood Gas analyser, as well as modern CT, digital x-ray, and ultrasound capabilities.
Our team is trained and equipped in a range of minimally invasive techniques and procedures to optimize patient care and recovery, from fractures to nutritional support, foreign body retrieval, and curative interventions.
Critical care cases often require advanced interventions with specialized skill sets such as tracheostomy tubes and mechanical ventilation, treatment and support for hemorrhage and anemia, seizure monitoring and management, and other acute/chronic conditions like renal failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, unstable diabetics, complex endocrine disorders, and blood transfusions.
The team at Southpaws is trained and available to provide this essential care, 24 hours a day.
